For Those in Bondage to Addiction

Addiction touches the lives of almost everyone. In the modern world, addiction is just as prevalent as cancer. Many of us suffer from it or have family members who struggle with it, either way, it is here and in our faces. It is vitally important that we, as Christians, do not divorce addiction from sin, and visa-versa. Although wonderful breakthroughs in the mental health industry have revealed various characteristics to addiction and addictive personalities; sin is, as has always been, the root cause of the problem. This might be difficult for people to accept but the truth always is. Remember not all addiction is pharmaceutical; sex, gambling, money, sports, work, hobbies, etc. can all be addictive behaviors. Anything that brings you further from the will of God and His Kingdom can mistakenly become an addictive sin in the life of fallen creatures.

The answer to addiction is self-control! This is done through the work of the Holy Spirit in Christ Jesus. The world would have you believe that self-esteem is the virtue most needed in today’s society, it is not. Do you really think that God is concerned with how you feel about yourself, in spite of your depravity? This notion is absurd as it is unbiblical. Self-control is the answer to sin and is still the best way out of addiction. Preach this to your congregation, practice this in your support groups. With the help of the scriptures and the Holy Spirit addiction can be beaten. It has very little chance without true repentance and accountability.

Addiction

“The devotion of a person to something, whether sin in general or food, alcohol or wealth in particular, so as to become dependent upon it. A person will never be satisfied in such a state of slavery. The answer to addiction is self-control through the resources of the new life in Christ.”

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

“They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: ‘The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.'”
